Most electric trikes will get you from A to B, they’re stable, and they’re easy to ride. For a long time, that was enough for most people. But if you’ve been trike shopping recently, you’ll notice that they have come a long way. The newest models from Mooncool, the FT1, TK2, and TK2 PRO, are a good example of where things are heading.
These electric trikes have some fantastic modern features that were previously unavailable. They now have reverse mode, longer-range batteries, more capable motors, and terrain-specific tires. The gap between what a decent electric trike could do five years ago and what these three can do now is bigger than most people realize.
Here’s what’s new, and why these improvements enhance riding and ownership.
Effortless Maneuvering: The Magic of Reverse Mode
Here’s a scenario most trike riders know well. You’ve parked at a slight angle, maybe in a garage, maybe on a path, and now you need to back out. On a standard trike, you would need to get off and push 80 or 90 lbs of metal by hand. Doing this is not ideal at the best of times, and extremely awkward if you have any kind of mobility issue or if you’ve parked on rough ground or on an incline.
Both the TK2 and TK2 PRO have reverse mode built in. All you need to do is press and hold the right buttons, and the motor takes over, easing the trike backward at under 2.5 mph. Let go, and it stops. You stay in the saddle the whole time, making the whole maneuver super simple.

Once you’ve used reverse mode a couple of times, it feels like something that should have always been there. Reverse mode is especially useful if you park in a tight garage or are on a narrow path with no room to turn.
Most electric trikes at this price point don’t have reverse mode. On the TK2 and TK2 PRO, it’s standard.
Unmatched Power and Range
The TK2 PRO is where Mooncool’s electric trikes step up to a whole new level.
It has a 48V 750W helical-gear motor, which delivers a lot of continuous power for a trike. Hills that would have a lower-powered motor working hard are dealt with much more easily. The Sine Wave FOC controller keeps power delivery smooth, so you don’t get that slightly unnerving shove when the assistance kicks in. It ramps up gradually, and it feels incredibly natural after a few rides.
Battery-wise, the TK2 PRO has a 48V 20Ah battery, which is good for 45 to 75 miles per charge. At the lower end, you’re looking at hillier riding with a heavier load. But lighter riders on flat ground in a lower assist mode will get closer to the top. Most people will get a range somewhere in the middle, which is still plenty for most people’s needs.
The TK2 is powered by a 48V 15Ah battery with a 35-60-mile range. This is often plenty for errands, neighborhood rides, and regular recreational use. The FT1’s 48V 14.5Ah battery offers a range of up to 60 miles, giving off-road recreational riders enough capacity for a proper day out without causing range anxiety.
Safety and Stability on Any Terrain
All three models are designed to be as stable as possible, starting with the rear differential.
On a trike without one, the rear wheels are locked together. That means one wheel drags during cornering, upsetting the handling and making it unstable. The differential lets each rear wheel spin independently through a corner, so the trike tracks smoothly and predictably. You notice it most on gravel or uneven ground, where a locked-axle trike would feel twitchy.
The TK2 and TK2 PRO have powerful hydraulic disc brakes, which need far less hand pressure to bite than mechanical brakes. This is beneficial for anyone with reduced hand strength. The brakes also cut motor power the moment you touch them, so you’re never fighting against the motor when you slow down.
The FT1 approaches stability differently. Those 20" x 4.0" fat tires put a much larger contact patch on the ground than a standard trike tire, and the difference in grip on loose or uneven surfaces is immediately obvious. Packed dirt, gravel, grass, and sand all feel far more manageable than they would on narrow tires. The suspension fork takes care of the bumps, absorbing vibrations and impacts before they reach your hands and keeping the front wheel in proper contact with the ground on rougher tracks.

Between the three models, you have a trike for pretty much any surface most adult riders are likely to encounter.
Confidence Built Into Every Ride
The tech is impressive, but the point is to give the rider as much confidence as possible.
Three wheels mean you don’t have to perform a balancing act every time you ride. Also, there’s no unclipping a foot at traffic lights, no wobble when you stop on a camber, and no stress about mounting and dismounting. For anyone who’s been put off cycling by balance concerns, or who’s coming back to it after an injury or a long break, an electric trike removes the part that feels risky.

These three trikes also have low-step frames, making it easy to get on and off without having to hoist yourself over a high top tube. They also put you in an upright riding position, which takes the pressure off your wrists and lower back. Front and rear baskets, lights, and fenders come fitted as standard on all three models, so you’re riding from day one rather than spending time working out what else you need to buy.
Final Thoughts
The FT1, TK2, and TK2 PRO aren’t trying to be the same trike at different price points. Each one is built for a specific kind of rider and a specific kind of riding. But what they share is a level of capability that makes a noticeable difference to daily life on a trike. Take a look at the full Mooncool electric trike lineup and see which one fits how you ride.
