From Couch to Century: Sarah’s 100-Mile Journey at 58

From Couch to Century: Sarah’s 100-Mile Journey at 58

Sarah K. hadn't touched a bike in a decade. Bad knees, shaky balance, and a growing fear of falling kept her off the road. She was once a very confident rider and often rode through the hills of Boulder, Colorado. However, over time, she found herself walking shorter distances, driving more often, and slowly becoming less active than she used to be.

Then at 58, she discovered the Moocool TK1 electric trike, which changed everything. Just three months later, she rode her new trike 100 miles along the Colorado Front Range.

"I cried at mile 50," Sarah admits. "Not from pain, but from joy. I was BACK."

Why Did Sarah Stop Riding?

Sarah's story may be familiar to you or someone you know. She didn't stop cycling all at once; it happened over time. A knee injury led to time off the bike, which caused her to fall out of the habit of riding. That time stretched into months, then years. During this time, her fitness faded, her balance weakened, and riding a bike began to feel risky.

"I used to ride without thinking about it. Then I started hesitating every time I looked at the bike," she says. "I worried I'd fall. I worried I couldn't handle the hills anymore."

This drop in confidence stopped Sarah from riding. Her bike stayed in the garage collecting dust, and the habit disappeared.

Her First Ride On The Mooncool TK1

The day Sarah swung her leg over a Mooncool TK1, everything changed for the better. A neighbour offered her a test ride around the neighbourhood, but she initially turned down the opportunity. She expected it to feel slow, awkward, and cumbersome, and not like a "proper bike."

But her neighbour insisted that Sarah go for a ride, and she was pleasantly surprised. She immediately felt comfortable and stable.

"It was like stabilisers, but cooler," she says. "I felt solid. My feet didn't wobble. The motor kicked in right when I needed it."

She pedaled a few blocks and didn't want to turn back, so she rode some more! The 55Nm of torque from the TK1's electric motor made the uphill section manageable and actually fun. She also loved how the trike handled turns and uneven pavement without any issues.

This short ride changed Sarah's mindset.

"I didn't feel fragile. I felt strong. I didn't feel nervous. I felt in control."

By the end of the week, she had placed her order for a Mooncool TK1.

Starting Small

It can be tempting to go all out straight away, but Sarah took the sensible option. She started riding a regular 5-mile route around her neighbourhood. Doing so built up her confidence and allowed her to get familiar with her trike.

She gradually increased the distance of her routes to 10 miles, then 15. Her legs grew stronger, and her endurance improved, so much so that she started venturing out of the city.

Sarah loved that riding became a part of her life again. She looked forward to getting outside and noticed positive changes in her energy, mood, and sleep.

Building To 100 Miles On An Electric Trike

Three months after her first ride on a Mooncool TK1, Sarah signed up for a local century event. This 100-mile challenge took riders around a scenic route through Colorado's Front Range. The planned route was varied with gradual climbs and winding country roads. Enough to challenge an inexperienced rider.

Sarah wanted to prepare thoroughly for this challenge. So, she stuck to a simple training plan. She scheduled three rides per week, gradually increasing her distance, and factoring in rest days.

She also ensured she had enough water and snacks on hand during each ride. Sarah even made a playlist of songs that reminded her of her younger riding days for motivation.

It wasn't plain sailing all the way, as her knees often hurt while riding. But when this happened, she increased the assistance level to take the pressure off. However, on the days when she felt strong, she pushed a little harder.

"The electric assist was key. It let me train hard without overdoing it. I could ride longer without worrying about crashing from fatigue."

Sarah decided not to count calories or track every metric. She thought it would add too much pressure, so she just stayed focused on keeping moving and increasing distance.

The Big Ride

Her 100-mile ride took place in early summer. On the day of the event, she arrived with a fully charged battery, two spare inner tubes, and a lot of determination.

Once Sarah reached the halfway point, she paused at a fantastic viewing spot. Here, she took a photo, sat on a bench, and cried.

"I cried at mile 50," Sarah admits. "Not from pain, but from joy. I was BACK." "I felt something open up," she says. "I remembered who I used to be. And I felt proud of who I had become."

She completed the whole 100-mile route just before sunset. Her legs ached, but she was elated with what she had achieved.

Life After 100 Miles

Since her 100-mile event, Sarah has clocked many more miles on her Mooncool TK1. She still rides three or four times per week, solo or with a small group of friends.

She plans to take more cycling trips next spring to continue enjoying her Mooncool TK1 and see where it takes her. Sarah's electric trike has surprised her in how it's changed her life for the better. It has reminded her that you can stay active, improve the quality of life, and rekindle the love for something she used to enjoy.
